How consumers choose where to buy online

Ecommerce is so big today. It’s convenient and it’s easy. However, every once in a while, we get to encounter unfortunate circumstances that sometimes make us laugh or might just drive us crazy, because either you receive the wrong product, different from the description or worst, fake or defective. Lucky for you if the seller or the site accepts returns or processes a refund. We might give them a second chance. But, for those that are strictly for selling only, nah ah ah!

It is important to know what drives your customers in purchasing their products online, and if you do understand how consumers think, will put you and your business at an advantage.


For Filipino consumers, there are products that can be sold through online platforms easily without having some kind of doubt about the seller, but how about those products that require meticulous checking before a customer makes a purchase? Some of the products that would make the customer think twice of buying online are:

  • Electronic products such as laptops, computers, cell phones, game stations, etc.
  • Appliances

  1. Check the Seller Profile/Company Information. The consumers would often review the information about the company or the profile of the Seller to check it’s legitimacy. Furthermore, if there is a Seller/Company rating, it would even give the consumers more ideas as to the reliability of a company. Because, if a Seller has a good rating, it gives the impression that this company is indeed reliable and legit.
  2. Product Listing. Consumers might get weirded out to find that a site’s product listing doesn’t have a certain type of category they follow. Imagine buying a beauty product or a make-up set on a site dominated by pet supplies. For some it might be okay, but some, IT IS NOT OKAY.
  3. Product Review. Definitely a MUST! When purchasing a product, I would say it’s a number 1 rule for consumers to check the product reviews basically to know the buying and product experience of fellow consumers. Specifically for the products mentioned above, one wouldn’t dare purchase an item from a seller or a site without some legit customer feedback, I wouldn’t.
  4. Return and Refund Policy. One of the most important pieces of information that a customer must know is the returns, exchange and refunds policy. No questions asked, it’s a necessity.
  5. Discounts and Promotions. This is a bonus, if you find an Online site or a Seller that offers discounts or the price is cheaper than the current market value, lucky you! You are indeed maximizing the perks of online shopping.
